Stacy Garcia, 19, is a Calexico, California native attending Imperial Valley College as a second-year journalism student.  “Right after high school, my parents didn’t let me go off to a university because they said I was too young and I needed to mature before I went off on my own,” she said.  Stacy is planning to attend San Diego State University in Fall 2010 to earn her bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies.

Stacy’s Spring 2010 journalism project for IVC explores a little-known artwork that has international importance.  The two-mile “Bi-national Mural” is a means of countering the stark reality of border issues presented by the bland fence erected between Calexico and Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico at the turn of the century.

“I want this story to encourage other artists from the valley to promote their art, because it does make a change in the lives of people,” Stacy said.
